School Capacity Review and Closure Consideration

As Shoreline School District examines the most effective and efficient ways to deliver the best educational service we can provide to our community, we must examine many factors, including declining enrollment, school funding limitations, and the resources and supports required. We have convened a School Capacity Review and Closure Consideration (SCRCC) task force that will work toward making a recommendation in fall 2024 of the most viable elementary school for possible closure for the 2025-26 school year.

October 10 Meeting Update

After conversations that included a review of data and information collected over the course of the review process, the task force members chose to continue deliberation. As a result, no schools were removed from further consideration at the October 10 SCRCC meeting.

At the October 15 SCRCC meeting, the task force will make its final decision about which school to recommend to the Shoreline School Board for possible closure. The meeting may go beyond the typical 7:00 pm end time to accommodate discussion, deliberation, and voting.

The School Capacity Review and Closure Consideration (SCRCC) task force met on October 1 to:

  • review and discuss the data and information that they have received to date
  • deliberate and vote to remove one or more elementary schools from the list for possible closure beginning with the 2025-26 school year
  • begin identifying key elements for example boundary models

After a review of data and information collected over the course of the review process,  the 19 task force members in attendance engaged in a deliberation and voting process that began with ranking the schools that they believed should be considered for removal from the list of schools being considered for possible closure. The group discussed the school with the most votes for removal, and members then cast a ballot to determine if that school would be removed from the list.

The schools that were still on the list for consideration going into this evening’s meeting were: Brookside, Echo Lake, Highland Terrace, and Syre elementary schools.

By the end of the meeting, the task force voted to remove one school from further consideration for a possible closure in the 2025-26 school year:

  • Echo Lake Elementary School

The schools remaining on the consideration list for recommendation of a possible closure are:

  • Brookside Elementary School
  • Highland Terrace Elementary School
  • Syre Elementary School

The task force's recommendation of the most viable school for one possible K-5 school closure is anticipated in mid to late October 2024.
