Snow Delay & Cancelation Decision-Making Process

School closures have a big impact on our families. While we can't anticipate or accommodate every individual's unique situation, student and staff safety is our top priority.  

We make the very best decisions we can with the information available at the time. Our goal is to minimize the loss of instructional time while keeping students and staff safe. Here is the process:

  • The night before, staff drive our district’s roadways.
  • Starting at 3:30 a.m., staff drive our district’s roads, including our most challenging roadways.
  • At 4:30 a.m., they meet to discuss road conditions and current temperatures.
  • Next, they review hourly weather forecasts to determine whether conditions are improving or deteriorating.
  • Finally, a decision is made and communicated to families if a delay or cancellation is required.
  • Throughout the day, staff review updated weather forecasts to begin planning for the following day.

*If conditions and available information allow a decision to be made prior to the day of cancellation or delay, families will be notified in order to allow ample time to make arrangements.*

While there is always pressure when surrounding school districts cancel, delay or early release schools, each district considers its own unique conditions first. It is helpful to know what surrounding districts are doing, but no other school district has the exact combination of roads, highways, or city public works and weather forecasting data in place.

We realize not everyone will agree with our decisions. We are deliberate and thorough in our process and decision-making as it impacts not only your child, but every child in our district. It is for this reason that, as parents and guardians, you are encouraged to use your judgment to determine what is best for your children.
