Vision & Hearing Screening

Nurses conduct health screening based on state law and district policy.

Vision screening

Vision screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7, plus other times a parent or staff member has a concern. Schools are required to screen for both near and distance vision concerns.
Vision screening is generally conducted in the fall or early winter. If the screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending your student have a complete exam by an eye professional.
Nurses in Shoreline School District primarily use a SPOT Vision Screener to complete screening, although traditional eye charts may also be used.
If you need assistance accessing an eye doctor or glasses, please contact the nurse at your student's school.

Hearing screening is provided for all students in grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7, plus other times a parent or staff member has a concern.
Initial hearing screening is generally conducted in the fall or early winter. If the screening identifies possible concerns, you will be sent a letter recommending your student visit their primary care provider or pediatrician for an additional evaluation. They can then be referred to a hearing specialist if needed.
Shoreline has a District Audiologist and Teacher for Deaf/Hard of hearing students when needed. Contact your school nurse with questions or concerns about your student's hearing.
