Identification
Screening and Testing Process
The Highly Capable Department has revised its screening and testing procedures to remain in compliance with state legislation enacted in the spring of 2023. These changes are still in place, helping us better identify and support students with advanced learning needs.
Screening vs. Assessment
What is Screening?
During screening, the Highly Capable Department reviews recently-collected student-level data. Screener data may include the CogAT Screener, classroom observation data, WaKIDS data, DIBELS, i-Ready scores, etc. Students who meet or exceed the screening criteria for their grade and have parent/guardian permission to participate in testing will move on to assessment. Starting in 2023-2024, Shoreline will review screening data for all kindergarten, 1st, 3rd & 5th grade students.
Appeals are not accepted for screening determinations per district board policy 2166.
What is Assessment?
Students Grades 1 and above who meet or exceed the screening threshold are invited to test. During assessment, additional tests may be administered. These assessments may include the CogAT (screener, post screener, or complete) and/or Iowa assessments.
