Superintendent Susana Reyes' Message
Welcome to the 2024-25 school year!
I hope that you and your children enjoyed the summer break and that the next few days include excitement for our first day of school on Tuesday, August 27! I am truly honored and excited to begin my fourth year in Shoreline School District and grateful to know so many of our students and families. Thank you for your ongoing trust and support!
As you might imagine, over the past several weeks, our school and district administrators along with many support staff have been preparing to welcome everyone back; the last two weeks have included professional development sessions for staff across the district and welcome events for our new staff. School offices have been buzzing with back-to-school preparations and enrolling new students for the school year. We look forward to seeing each one of our students next week, and we welcome the opportunity to connect and engage with our families all throughout the year.
We are also excited to share the launch of our new District Strategic Plan. The plan was co-developed over the course of last school year by a coalition of over 50 people including students, staff, teachers, administrators, parents, community members, and our school board. We are proud that the plan includes contributions from survey feedback that included over 2,000 responses, of which 830 were students! The plan was officially approved and adopted by the School Board on June 4, and I am happy to share some key details.
Envision Shoreline: Engage. Inspire. Empower.
The Strategic Plan is built on a foundation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports (MTSS), a system that is established to ensure targeted support to all students so that they can succeed academically and behaviorally. On this foundation are two critical pillars: literacy and support for students’ social, emotional, and behavioral needs. With these two pillars as our key focus areas, we can ensure progress toward optimal learning across all subject areas and social and emotional well-being for each of our students.
To track our progress, we have set three ambitious targets that include all students, with particular attention to LatinX, Native American/Indigenous, Black and African American students, Multilingual Learner students, students who receive free and reduced price lunch, and students with disabilities.
By Spring of 2029:
- 85% of Shoreline 5th and 8th graders will read at grade level
- 95% of Shoreline students will report feeling safe and welcome in school
- 95% of Shoreline students will graduate on time
Progress takes time and, therefore, we have established the spring of 2029 as our target year for achieving our goals. We look forward to sharing more about the implementation of Envision Shoreline throughout the year. We are so proud of the work of the Strategic Plan Coalition and the contributions by so many of you. Thank you! To learn more, please see the Strategic Plan Executive Summary.
With gratitude, hope, and our Shoreline Schools tradition of working together in community, we are confident we will succeed in supporting each of our students on their journey as they learn, grown, explore, and ultimately discover their passion and path to fulfilling their dreams, turning our vision of engaging, inspiring, and empowering every student into a reality.
Sincerely,
